Tesco’s Halloween pumpkins start at 50p each this year. Its standard carving pumpkin is down to 55p after Tesco matched Aldi’s price, and its small Munchkin pumpkins are two for £1 with a Clubcard. At the top end, a large carving pumpkin costs £2, according to Tesco’s Halloween pumpkin range.

That makes Tesco one of the two cheapest big supermarkets for pumpkins this year. A price check reported by Grocery Gazette put Tesco and Sainsbury’s joint first, both averaging £1.30 across their fixed-price pumpkins, ahead of Aldi, Lidl and Asda.

The standard pumpkin is the one to watch. It normally costs 65p, according to price tracker Trolley, but Tesco has cut it to 55p under its Aldi Price Match scheme, which matches Aldi’s price on hundreds of everyday items. Aldi’s medium pumpkin is 55p this year, so the two are now level.

Our take: for most families, two standard 55p pumpkins for carving plus a few Munchkins for the table is the sweet spot. With a Clubcard, two standard pumpkins and four Munchkins come to £3.10.

Where Tesco’s pumpkins come from

Tesco says its pumpkins come from UK growers. One of them is Oakley Farm, a family business in East Anglia that has grown pumpkins for more than 30 years. Tesco says the pumpkins are harvested and trimmed by hand, then cured in greenhouses to toughen their skins, which helps them last longer once carved.

How Tesco compares with other supermarkets

Tesco and Sainsbury’s tied for the cheapest average pumpkin price in a comparison of nine supermarkets by Fast Loan UK, reported by Grocery Gazette. Prices were checked on 7 October 2026 and are averages of each supermarket’s fixed-price pumpkins, so sizes differ:

SupermarketAverage pumpkin priceExamples

Two things to note. Tesco’s prices have moved since that check: the small pumpkin recorded at 59p is now 55p on tesco.com. And Aldi’s extra-large pumpkin at £2.39 is bigger than anything Tesco sells, so if size is what matters, Aldi is worth a look. For the cheapest carving pumpkin, though, Tesco and Aldi are now level at 55p.

Which Tesco pumpkin should you buy?

For carving with children

The standard 55p pumpkin is a good size for small hands and easy to hollow out. Large pumpkins have thicker walls, which are harder for children to cut through. Let younger children draw the face and scoop out the seeds with a spoon while an adult does the cutting.

For a show-stopping doorstep lantern

The £2 large pumpkin is the one. Its shopper rating on tesco.com was 2.4 out of 5 when we checked, with 18 reviews, which suggests a mixed experience with online orders. A large pumpkin is the one item worth choosing yourself, so buy it in store if you can.

For cooking

Carving pumpkins are grown for size and shape, not flavour, and their flesh is watery. If you want pumpkin soup or roast pumpkin, the £1.20 small culinary pumpkin will taste much better. You can still cook the flesh from a carving pumpkin, but it works best blended into soup or a curry.

For decoration without carving

Munchkin pumpkins at two for £1 with a Clubcard are the cheapest way to decorate a table, a windowsill or a doorstep. Uncarved, they last for weeks, so they will still look good after Halloween.

How to pick a good pumpkin

  1. Check the base and the stalk end for soft or mouldy patches. Press gently: it should feel firm all over.
  2. Look for a sturdy, dry stalk. Never carry a pumpkin by its stalk, as it can snap off and let rot in.
  3. Choose one that sits flat and does not roll, so your lantern stands up straight.
  4. Tap it. A firm, hollow sound is good; a dull thud can mean the inside is soft.
  5. Look for even colour without deep cuts or bruises in the skin.

When to carve so it lasts until Halloween

A carved pumpkin usually starts to soften within a few days, and faster in a warm room. With Halloween on a Saturday this year, carving on the Thursday or Friday evening gives you the best-looking lantern on the night.

  • Keep uncarved pumpkins somewhere cool and dry until you carve them.
  • After carving, rub a little petroleum jelly or vegetable oil on the cut edges to slow drying out.
  • Keep a carved pumpkin outside or somewhere cool when you are not displaying it.
  • Use a battery LED tealight instead of a real candle. It is safer near children’s costumes and doorways, and it does not cook the pumpkin from inside.

Don’t waste it: what to do with the flesh and seeds

Millions of pumpkins are bought just for carving: figures shared by Devon County Council in 2025 estimated 30.4 million pumpkins are bought to carve in the UK each Halloween, according to Grocery Gazette. Much of the inside ends up in the bin, but it is perfectly good food.

Quick pumpkin soup Soften a chopped onion and a crushed garlic clove in a little oil. Add the pumpkin flesh you scooped out and enough stock to cover, then simmer for about 20 minutes until soft. Blend until smooth and season. A pinch of chilli, a spoon of curry paste or a splash of cream all lift a watery carving pumpkin. Roasted pumpkin seeds Rinse the seeds and pick off the stringy bits, then pat them dry. Toss in a little oil and salt, spread on a tray and roast at about 180°C for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring once, until golden and crunchy.

Scoop out and save the flesh as soon as you carve, then refrigerate it straight away or freeze it for later. Do not eat a carved pumpkin that has been sitting outside for days. After Halloween, put the old lantern in your food waste or garden waste bin, or your compost heap, rather than general rubbish.
